Roofing Installation Process

The best time of year to have a roof inspection and have repairs made or a roof replacement is in the fall before the frigid winds blow and cold temperatures set into Utah. When the weather is nice and slightly cool, you lose much less energy when a roof needs replacing than in cold weather, when your heating bill rises drastically due to the old roof removal. New shingles take time to seal and form an airtight barrier before it becomes cold during the winter’s snow.

Even if you only require some roof patching in a small area, it is best done in the fall without waiting until spring. A large snowfall can severely damage a roof that is faulty, cause leaks inside your home, and cause ice dams. Vertex Roofing Contractors is here to help you with your roofing needs and we offer inspections and a free bid to keep you safe and secure in your home or business.

Roof Installation Steps in Salt Lake City

The roofing installation process may vary slightly depending on what type of roofing materials you have initially.

  • It is a good practice to remove all of the old roofing in the case of asphalt shingles down to the roof’s wooden sheathing. Adding layers on top of layers may seem like a good idea to make a roof thicker and seemingly better insulated. This practice can actually cause premature roof failure if the layer underneath is already faulty.
  • After the old roofing is removed, the wooden sheathing needs a close examination. Areas where the old roof leaked could have also damaged the wood and left moist spots or holes in the sheathing. All of these areas need to be replaced for a firm surface to hold the new roofing. It is a good idea to have an ice and water barrier installed around roofs in Utah. It adheres around the edges of the roof and at the bottom edge then is nailed down to prevent ice dams and extra roof damages.
  • A metal drip edge installs on the lower roof before the underlayment and on the sides of the roof afterwards. It is installed over the top of the water and ice barrier and nailed down onto the roof. This prevents water from running down the siding and entering behind it causing water damage inside the walls.
  • The next step in the roofing process is to attach either a felt paper or synthetic underlayment. Synthetic material is a bit more expensive, but does a much better job of protecting your roof. The underlayment is rolled out onto the roof sheathing and secured with cap nails with each row overlaying the previous. The next step is to attach the roofing material of either asphalt shingles or metal on the exterior of the roof.

When to Get a Roof Replacement

Having a professional roof inspection can help with the decision of whether you need patching, partial replacement or an entire new roof. If you have several areas that are failing, you may decide to have your roof repaired. If your roof is near the life expectancy, it would serve you best to have the entire roof replaced at this point.

If you are planning to sell your home or business soon, you probably don’t want a repair, as it can be obvious when only a portion is replaced, and prospective buyers may view it as a faulty roof. It is best to have your roof evaluated before temperatures get cold, and conditions become more dangerous from a failing roof. Time is of the essence of proper roofing.
